Horror is a genre which has many aspects to it. One main function in horror is to scare the audience however people don't just look to be scared in a horror. They always look for a number of things one being a good story line.
Why do people choose to watch horrors?
People do enjoy being scared which is why the like watching horrors which then links In with socialising, friends go out together (cinema) to go as group and watch horrors to get the thrill of being scared together.
Modern day horrors are often short and simple with a short story line, there made so people can enjoy and be scared often forgetting about there needs to be a good story line so al audiences can enjoy not just teenagers .
Another feature is 'Star power' each star has there own reputation which obviously you would think that they would like to maintain so as well as people wanting to watch a certain film because this star is in it and they love them. Some people who even know very little about the star or has seen them in another film which they may have liked. So they will then go and watch that film hoping that they keep to the standards that they have had before. This often will change peoples minds if they want to go watch the film once they know who is starring in the film.
Thirdly which I have talked about briefly above is the 'scare factor' which people enjoyed being scared and love to watch a film for the thrill. This is the same to say with any genre...
Each genre obviously has different needs to fill obviously horror being to scare to comedy to make people laugh to Rom-Com to be funny however also have romance within so people like different genres individually and will go and watch a film to see what it is like linking in again with 'Star
power'
Finally the final feature is timing of film which also links in with genre is depending on the time of the year will often determine how much success the film has. For example bring a horror out near Halloween people will want to go see it as its Halloween the same as bring a Rom-Com or a Romance out near valentines people will choose to go watch a film suited for that period of time as it will often 'get them in the mood'
Who is the audience in Film Noir?
A Film Noir target audience has always been mainly focused on adults (Mature adults 30+) However in our Film Noir we have changed this as to create a twist but still keep most of the conventions to keep the trailer to be notices it was Film Noir but creating it available and wanted to be watched by teenagers. This is also is backed up that some of the trailers scenes are in a school so teenagers can relate to the trailer which will make them more interested in what's happened within the trailer and want to go watch the film itself.
Usually films are made today with a goal to bring in a larger audience, this is why it's rare to see films rated higher than 18 as they know that it's mostly teenagers that go to the cinema. However with a Film Noir the audience is supposed to generally be adults, due to when they were originally made. Most teenagers may have not even watched a Film Noir as they have more less been replaced by thriller. The themes in our production are adult, and focus on an adult in a strange situation concerning crime however it's focused in a teen-based area (A Sixth Form College) this is where we have changed the conventions of the genre to fit with a modern audience, however this is the only key concept we have changed.
